A statement of trans-inclusive feminism

I wholeheartedly endorse this statement of trans-inclusive feminism, because feminism–hell, womanhood–without our trans sisters is stunted and incomplete.

I’m not sure how I feel about the utility of this–I have been on the Internet for twenty years now, which is more than long enough to get really cynical about online petitions–but I think it’s important enough that I sign on anyway.

Totally understand your cynicism, especially as people love to be activists in theory, rather than in their praxis. However, I will say that I put a lot of sway in the words of a significant portion of the people who have signed that petition. They’re not just trying to make themselves look good. They genuinely care about this issue.

The utility is simply the reminder, in the face of all the transphobic vitriol that we find around us daily, that there are many who do not feel they would be better off without us. Also, it reminds those that normalize their own transphobic eliminationist outlook, that no, they don’t speak for all ‘real’ feminists.

    Thank you for your support.

That was why I ultimately decided to sign on, after waffling about it for a bit. I’ve seen, entirely too often, statements and petitions used as an easy substitute for, y’know, actual activism. But this issue is important enough that a statement of support would have some value, so I cast cynicism aside.
